Uganda Launches Medical Drone to Deliver Supplies to Island Health Facilities

October 27, 2026

Uganda has launched a medical logistics drone flight connecting Butabika, Koome and Kalangala Town Council in a move aimed at improving the delivery of essential medical supplies and the transportation of laboratory samples from hard-to-reach communities.

The flight was launched by the Minister of State for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, Hon. Dr. Charles Ayume, and involved a drone travelling from Butabika to Koome, proceeding to Kalangala Town Council before returning to Butabika.

The drone carried essential medical supplies to health facilities serving island communities and transported laboratory samples back for testing, demonstrating how aerial logistics could help address transportation challenges affecting healthcare delivery in geographically isolated areas.

The flight was launched by the Minister of State for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, Hon. Dr. Charles Ayume

According to Dr. Ayume, the initiative is intended to generate evidence on the feasibility of integrating drone transportation into Uganda's existing Integrated National Sample Transport Network.

“Evidence from these flights will inform decisions on how drone transport can be integrated into the existing Integrated National Sample Transport Network, strengthening timely and reliable sample transportation from hard-to-reach communities,” Ayume said.

The initiative could help reduce delays associated with transporting medical supplies and laboratory specimens from island communities, where water transport, distance and other logistical constraints can complicate access to healthcare services.

Reliable transportation of laboratory samples is particularly important for timely diagnosis, enabling health workers to obtain test results and make informed treatment decisions without unnecessary delays.

If successfully integrated into the national sample transport system, drone technology could complement existing transportation methods and improve connections between remote health facilities and laboratories.

The trial also provides an opportunity for health authorities to assess the operational feasibility of drone-based deliveries, including their reliability, turnaround times and suitability for serving geographically isolated communities.

The findings are expected to inform decisions on the potential expansion of drone-supported medical logistics as Uganda explores ways to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve access to essential health services across the country.

Tuesday's event was attended by a cross section of guests including the Director General of Health Services, Dr Charles Olaro and a host of lawmakers.
