Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday witnessed a significant milestone in regional integration as the Federal Republic of Somalia formally acceded to the East African Community (EAC). The historic moment, hosted in Uganda, marked a crucial step toward fostering prosperity, security, and unity among East African nations.

President Museveni, hosting the signing ceremony, reiterated the importance of Somalia’s accession to the EAC. He underscored the strategic significance of integration in advancing the collective welfare of African citizens and fortifying the common bonds among East African people.

“The signing of the treaty of accession by Somalia to the East African Community is a pivotal moment in our shared journey towards regional prosperity and security,” remarked President Museveni in his address, echoing his earlier sentiments expressed in Arusha.

Highlighting the collaborative effort behind this momentous occasion, President Museveni extended his gratitude to His Excellency Salva Kiir, President of South Sudan, who chairs the EAC, and the EAC Secretariat for their role in selecting Uganda as the host country for this historic event.

The accession of Somalia to the EAC signifies a significant expansion of the regional bloc, now comprising six member states, namely Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and the newest addition, Somalia. This development amplifies the potential for enhanced economic cooperation, trade facilitation, and collective progress across the region.

The decision by Somalia to join the EAC is poised to bring about mutual benefits, fostering economic growth through increased trade opportunities, improved infrastructure development, and shared knowledge and resources among member states.

Leaders across the region have extended their congratulations to Somalia for its accession to the EAC, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in steering the region toward a more prosperous and secure future.

As Somalia becomes an official member of the East African Community, the collective focus remains on leveraging this union to overcome challenges, promote stability, and create a conducive environment for the advancement and well-being of the East African populace.
