“A Loss to Tooro and Uganda,” Museveni Mourns King Oyo, Flags to Fly at Half-Mast for 3 Days

August 29, 2026

Uganda's President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed that the late Omukama of Tooro, His Highness Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, be accorded an official burial and that Uganda’s flags fly at half-mast for three days in honour of the deceased monarch.

In a condolence message to Ugandans, particularly the “Bazzukulu,” President Museveni described King Oyo’s death at the age of 34 as a major loss to Tooro and Uganda.

“It is with a lot of sadness that, on behalf of all Ugandans, Maama Janet and myself, I extend our most heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family of Tooro and to all Ugandans,” Museveni said.

The President described King Oyo as a prominent “Muzzukulu” who, despite his short life, had demonstrated significant potential to work with both the Central and Local Governments to advance the development of Tooro.

“What a loss to Tooro and Uganda,” Museveni said.

Government Supported King Oyo’s Treatment

Museveni revealed that Tooro’s Queen Mother, Her Royal Highness Best Kemigisa, had informed him months ago that King Oyo was suffering from an aggressive form of cancer.

According to the President, the Government supported the Royal Family in seeking medical treatment for the King first in Germany and later in the United States, where he died.

Museveni also said he was informed by the Queen Mother during a telephone conversation that King Oyo had left behind a young son who is expected to become heir to the Tooro throne.

He said the identity of the young heir would be made public at the appropriate time.

Museveni Praises King Oyo’s Relationship with Government

The President also praised King Oyo for working well with the Central Government and avoiding what he described as the mistake of using restored cultural institutions to promote sectarianism.

“HH Oyo worked well with the Central Government, thereby avoiding the mistake of trying to use the Cultural Institutions that were restored by the NRM to promote sectarianism,” Museveni said.

He called on other cultural leaders to understand the importance of maintaining a constructive relationship with the Central Government.

Three Days of Half-Mast

As part of the official mourning arrangements, Museveni directed that all national flags fly at half-mast for three days.

The three days will include the day before the burial, the day of the burial and the day after the burial.

The President concluded his message by praying for the late King’s soul to rest in eternal peace.

King Oyo, who ascended to the Tooro throne as a child in 1995, died at the age of 34 after battling cancer. His death has prompted condolences from political, cultural and international leaders, with tributes recognising his long reign and his contribution to the Tooro Kingdom.
