President Yoweri Museveni has criticized the practice of demanding exorbitant bride price, warning that it is discouraging young people from marrying and forcing many couples to begin married life burdened by debt.
Speaking during the Okuhingira (traditional marriage ceremony) of Kisha and Aaron Kafureeka, the President challenged the Banyankore community to reconsider the custom of asking for large numbers of cattle and millions of shillings as bride price.
“You, the Banyankole, are damaging the population with this thing of paying bride price. Why ask for 15 cows and millions of shillings? Why are you selling your children?” Museveni said. “You make young people fear marriage and, unfortunately, some begin their lives together in debt.”
The President congratulated the newlyweds on their union and conveyed greetings from the First Lady, Maama Janet Museveni. He encouraged the couple to build their marriage on friendship and mutual understanding, emphasizing that marriage is a partnership between two people and should not be undermined by unnecessary interference from others.
Beyond family matters, Museveni applauded the local community for embracing the government’s wealth creation agenda. He highlighted the economic opportunities presented by River Rwizi, which feeds Lake Kakyera, saying the abundant water resources provide strong potential for commercial agriculture through irrigation.
The President also paid tribute to the late freedom fighters Kaboyo and Kafureeka for their contribution to Uganda’s liberation struggle. He further commended Alice for raising her family well and wished Kisha and Aaron God’s blessings as they begin their married life together.
Ending on a humorous note, Museveni told the Bevugi that he would return to teach them “how to Kwevuga,” drawing laughter from those in attendance.
