Makindye East KCCA Councillor Ssendi Mosh Afrikan, popularly known as Mr Mosh, has launched a major clean-up campaign targeting a long-standing garbage hill in Kasanvu, Kisugu Parish, Makindye Division, pledging to restore cleanliness in the area and introduce regular waste collection exercises.

The councillor joined local leaders, KCCA officials and community members on Saturday in an operation to clear the massive dumpsite, which residents say has accumulated over several years and become a health hazard.

“Yesterday together with local leaders, Lord Mayor and KCCA ED, we embarked on clearing a long-standing garbage hill in Kasanvu – Kisugu Parish, Makindye,” Mosh said after the exercise.

He added, “We shall clear the area in two weeks and thereafter embark on fresh plans to collect waste every Saturday.”

The clean-up is part of wider efforts by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and local leaders to tackle poor waste management in city suburbs, where illegal dumping has continued to pose environmental and public health challenges.

Residents have long complained about the growing heap of garbage, citing foul smell, disease outbreaks and poor sanitation conditions. The waste mountain had become a source of concern for households and businesses in the area.

Mosh’s intervention has been welcomed by some residents, who see the initiative as a practical step toward addressing one of the community’s most persistent problems.

The councillor said the clean-up exercise would not end with the removal of the garbage hill, but would be followed by a structured waste management plan involving weekly collections and greater community participation.

KCCA has in recent months intensified efforts to improve sanitation across Kampala through partnerships with local leaders, community groups and residents, emphasizing that sustainable waste management requires collective responsibility.

If successfully implemented, the weekly Saturday waste collection programme could provide a lasting solution to illegal dumping in parts of Makindye and help improve the area’s sanitation standards.

The latest operation also comes as urban leaders increasingly focus on service delivery issues such as garbage collection, drainage management and public health, which remain top concerns for Kampala residents.
