Kampala, Saturday, 15 August 2026 — Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced a reshuffle of senior Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) commanders, with several General Officers transferred and appointed to new positions.
According to a statement issued by Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA), the changes take immediate effect.
Major General Joseph Ssemwanga has been transferred from his position as Deputy Commander Land Forces and appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Reserve Forces. He replaces Lieutenant General Charles Otema Awany, who is due to retire next week.
Major General Felix Busizoori, the outgoing Commander of the 4 Infantry Division, has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Land Forces.

Meanwhile, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, who has been commanding the 3 Infantry Division, will take over as Commander of the 4 Infantry Division.
Brigadier General Micheal Hyeroba, formerly Deputy Commander of the 1 Infantry Division, has been appointed Commander of the 3 Infantry Division.

The latest changes come as the UPDF prepares for the retirement of a number of senior officers, including Lt Gen Otema Awany.
The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs congratulated the General Officers on their new appointments and wished them success in their new assignments.
