KAMPALA — Uganda will on Wednesday unveil the name of its crude oil blend, giving oil produced from the country’s fields a distinct identity as the East African producer moves closer to entering the global crude oil market.
The naming of the blend is expected to establish a recognisable identity for Uganda’s crude, reflecting its origin, qualities and composition as the country prepares for commercial production and exports.
This move marks another step in Uganda’s transition from an oil exploration frontier to a producer seeking a place in international energy markets.
Giving the crude a distinct name will help differentiate Uganda’s oil in the global marketplace and associate the product with its source and physical characteristics. Crude oils traded internationally are commonly identified by names that reflect their geographic origin or other defining characteristics.
Uganda discovered commercially viable oil deposits in the Albertine Graben in western Uganda, with production centred on the Kingfisher and Tilenga projects. The country is developing the associated infrastructure needed to transport and export the crude, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) to the Tanzanian port of Tanga.
The planned unveiling therefore comes as Uganda works to establish the commercial identity of a resource that is expected to play a significant role in the country’s economic transformation.
Beyond branding, the name will serve as a reference point for international traders, refiners and other players in the petroleum industry as Uganda’s crude enters global markets.
Uganda has repeatedly said its oil resources will be used to support industrialisation, infrastructure development and broader economic transformation under its long-term development strategy.
The Wednesday unveiling will provide the first formal identity for the country’s crude blend as Uganda advances toward its long-awaited entry into the ranks of Africa’s oil-producing and exporting nations.
