Uganda, Pakistan Hold Inaugural Political Consultations, Sign MoU to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

The governments of Uganda and Pakistan successfully held the inaugural session of Political Consultations on Friday, January 17, 2025, in Kampala. The discussions, led by the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs, marked a significant step in formalizing a framework to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

Ahead of the consultations, the Pakistani delegation paid courtesy calls on Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Oryem Henry Okello, on January 16, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, on January 17. Both ministers welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the potential for collaboration in agro-processing, mineral development, and ICT investment.

The Ugandan delegation to the consultations was led by Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, Chief of Protocol and Acting Permanent Secretary, while the Pakistani delegation was headed by H.E. Mr. Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Foreign Secretary. The session culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Political Consultations, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to cooperation in political, economic, commercial, scientific, technical, and cultural domains at bilateral and international levels.

Held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere, the consultations addressed a range of bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest. Both sides reaffirmed their dedication to promoting peace and security while deepening Uganda-Pakistan relations. Key topics discussed included enhancing diplomatic ties, advancing regional cooperation, and strengthening engagement on multilateral platforms.

Ambassador Ssentongo highlighted the significance of the discussions in fostering greater collaboration between the two ministries and governments, as well as promoting people-to-people engagement. “I believe we shall progressively translate these aspirations into concrete actions for the benefit of our countries,” he stated.

H.E. Hamid Asghar Khan expressed gratitude on behalf of the Pakistani government for Uganda’s warm hospitality and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to furthering bilateral relations.

Both parties agreed to hold the second round of Political Consultations in Islamabad, Pakistan, at a mutually agreed date, underscoring their shared vision for sustained dialogue and cooperation.

This inaugural session reflects the shared values and aspirations of Uganda and Pakistan to strengthen their partnership and explore new opportunities for collaboration across multiple sectors.
