KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda and Nigeria are seeking to deepen economic and people-to-people ties through stronger air connectivity, with officials highlighting the role of aviation in expanding trade, tourism, investment and business opportunities between the two countries.

Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake said an airline should be viewed as more than a means of transportation, describing air connectivity as a strategic bridge linking people, businesses, markets and opportunities.

Wake noted that airlines facilitate the movement not only of people, but also goods and services, helping countries strengthen commercial and cultural connections.

“For Uganda and Nigeria, improved air connectivity can help bring businesses closer, open new markets and make it easier for investors and entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in both countries,” he said.

He argued that aviation should therefore be regarded as an enabler of economic development and regional integration, rather than simply a means of moving passengers from one destination to another.

The remarks come as Uganda and Nigeria seek to expand bilateral commercial engagement and increase interaction between their private sectors.

Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, DRM, from Nigeria’s Office of the Secretary to the Government, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Uganda.

Kana said Nigeria would ensure that outstanding memoranda of understanding and other bilateral agreements are concluded and signed before the next Joint Permanent Commission (JPC).

He said the process is expected to be completed within the year.

The Nigerian official also expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Uganda for the warm reception accorded to the Nigerian delegation, describing it as a reflection of the longstanding bonds between the two countries.

Kana further called for increased people-to-people and business exchanges, urging more Ugandans to visit Nigeria and more Nigerians to explore Uganda.

He said greater movement between the two countries would create opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs to establish partnerships, identify new markets and strengthen trade and investment ties.

The emphasis on air connectivity reflects the broader role of aviation in bilateral economic relations. Easier movement between markets can reduce the practical barriers faced by investors and businesses while supporting tourism, trade and professional exchanges.

For Uganda and Nigeria, stronger aviation links could provide an additional channel for expanding commercial relations between two of Africa’s major economies while complementing ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
