President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, describing the project as a major milestone in the transformation of the Karamoja sub-region.
Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, Museveni said Karamoja had made significant progress from the days of insecurity, cattle rustling and lawlessness, noting that the restoration of peace had laid the foundation for sustainable development.
“I reminded the wananchi that Karamoja has come a long way from the days of insecurity, cattle rustling and lawlessness. The restoration of peace has created the conditions for the Karamoja region to develop,” Museveni said.
The President said the new airport would enhance access to Kidepo Valley National Park, one of Uganda’s premier tourism destinations, while attracting investors and creating employment opportunities for local communities.
According to Museveni, the project is expected to boost tourism, expand markets for local products and stimulate economic activity across the region.
He revealed that more than 1,600 Ugandans are already employed on the airport project, highlighting its immediate impact on job creation.
Museveni also thanked investors and partners from the United Arab Emirates, particularly from Sharjah, for their confidence in Uganda’s economic potential.
“I thank our partners from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates for recognizing the immense opportunities that exist in Uganda and Africa,” he said.
Once completed, Kidepo International Airport is expected to strengthen connectivity to northeastern Uganda, support the tourism industry and further integrate Karamoja into the national economy.
