KAMPALA — Uganda and Ethiopia have agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, investment and air connectivity as Foreign Affairs Minister Adonia Ayebare held talks with Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Etsegenet Bezabih Yimenu, in Kampala.

The meeting took place on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, when Ambassador Yimenu paid a courtesy call on Minister Ayebare at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, the Ethiopian Ambassador conveyed warm congratulations from Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gedion Timothewos, to Ayebare and expressed confidence that Uganda’s foreign policy under his leadership would achieve further milestones in promoting regional peace, integration and prosperity.

The two officials reviewed the state of Uganda-Ethiopia bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Particular emphasis was placed on trade, investment and air connectivity, which both sides identified as priority areas for enhanced collaboration.

The two sides also welcomed plans to convene a mid-term review of the Uganda-Ethiopia Joint Ministerial Commission in the near future.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the review will assess progress made under the bilateral framework, address outstanding issues and identify new opportunities for expanded cooperation between Kampala and Addis Ababa.

The discussions further covered multilateral issues of common interest, particularly the forthcoming 32nd Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP32), which will be hosted in Addis Ababa.

Uganda and Ethiopia underscored the importance of COP32 as an opportunity for African countries to articulate a unified position and advance the continent’s priorities on climate action, adaptation and climate finance.

The meeting comes as Uganda continues to pursue a results-driven foreign policy focused on strengthening bilateral partnerships and expanding economic and diplomatic opportunities.

For Uganda and Ethiopia, the planned Joint Ministerial Commission review is expected to provide a platform to take stock of existing cooperation while identifying practical areas for further engagement.
