Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi has handed over a discharge certificate to Uganda’s last Ebola patient at the Mulago National Referral Hospital Isolation Unit in Kampala.

The discharge took place on Thursday morning, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s response to the Ebola outbreak.

The recovered patient, a Congolese national, praised the medical team for the tremendous care and dedication that led to his recovery.

Dr Baryomunsi also paid tribute to the health workers who treated the patient, noting that caring for people infected with a highly contagious disease requires exceptional courage and commitment.

“Not everyone has the courage to take on the task of treating a highly infectious disease, but our health workers accepted that responsibility,” the minister said.

With the last confirmed patient now discharged, Uganda begins a 42-day surveillance countdown. If no new Ebola case is recorded during that period, the outbreak will be declared over.
