The Permanent Secretary at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine, has officially inaugurated a Hydroxyurea manufacturing plant at Quality Chemical Industries Limited (QCIL) in Luzira, Kampala, marking a major milestone in the country’s fight against Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

Hydroxyurea is a life-saving medication widely used in the management of Sickle Cell Disease, helping to reduce painful crises, hospitalizations, and other severe complications associated with the condition.

The launch of local production is expected to significantly lower treatment costs, improve the availability of the medicine, and reduce Uganda’s dependence on imported pharmaceutical products.

Speaking as the chief guest during the launch ceremony, Dr. Diana Atwine commended QCIL for what she described as a timely and strategic intervention in Uganda’s healthcare sector.

She noted that increased access to Hydroxyurea will strengthen disease management efforts, improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and ease pressure on healthcare facilities across the country.

“This milestone aligns with Uganda’s broader strategy to manage Sickle Cell Disease. Through joint efforts, we want to embed the fight against Sickle Cell Disease in our primary health care system and take it across all fronts, including among religious leaders who wed carrier couples,” Dr. Atwine said.

QCIL said it will continue working closely with the Ministry of Health, healthcare providers, and development partners to strengthen Uganda’s response to non-communicable diseases, particularly Sickle Cell Disease.

The development comes at a time when Uganda continues to face a significant burden of Sickle Cell Disease, with health authorities emphasizing the importance of early screening, awareness campaigns, and access to affordable treatment.
