Pope Leo Phones Putin From Hospital: What They Discussed
October 16, 2026
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has telephoned Russian President Vladimir Putin from his hospital room in Rome, urging a humanitarian ceasefire in Ukraine to allow food and medical supplies into the conflict-hit city of Oleshky and facilitate the safe evacuation of civilians.
The call on Friday, October 16, 2026, came three days after the Pope underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pope expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s Kherson region, and called for a halt in fighting to enable humanitarian assistance to reach residents.
The Vatican said the proposed ceasefire would allow the delivery of food and medical assistance, alongside the voluntary and safe evacuation of civilians trapped in the affected area.
“The Holy Father reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to promoting dialogue and peace,” the Vatican statement said.
What Did Putin Say?
According to the Kremlin’s account of the conversation, Putin wished the Pope a speedy recovery and provided his explanation of the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky, attributing responsibility to the Ukrainian authorities.
The Kremlin also expressed support for the Vatican’s intention to help establish conditions for protecting local residents and facilitating the delivery of essential supplies. It said the two sides had agreed to coordinate efforts on the humanitarian issue.
The accounts from Moscow and the Vatican differed in their descriptions of responsibility for the crisis, but both indicated a willingness to support efforts addressing the plight of civilians.
Pope Continues Duties While Recovering
Despite being hospitalised, Pope Leo has continued carrying out official duties as he recovers from surgery.
The Vatican said on Friday that his postoperative recovery was progressing steadily and that he was able to perform normal daily activities independently.
He also celebrated Mass in a chapel arranged inside the hospital and thanked medical personnel for their work caring for patients.
The telephone conversation with Putin marks the second known call between the two leaders, following their earlier conversation on June 4, 2025.
The latest engagement highlights the Vatican’s continuing diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and address the humanitarian consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war.
