U.S. Mayor Eric Johnson Mourns King Oyo, Recalls Presenting Him With Dallas City Key

August 29, 2026

Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson has joined mourners in paying tribute to the late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, describing him as a “dignified and respected leader” whose death will be deeply felt in Uganda and beyond.

In a condolence message, Mayor Johnson extended his sympathies to the people of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom following the death of the 30-year-old monarch.

Johnson recalled meeting King Oyo five years ago during the monarch’s visit to Dallas, Texas, where he had the honour of presenting him with a key to the City of Dallas as a symbol of friendship.

“Five years ago, I had the honor of meeting King Oyo and presenting him with a key to the City of Dallas as a symbol of our friendship,” Johnson said.

The Dallas mayor said the late King Oyo left a strong impression on him, particularly for his dignity and standing as a respected leader.

Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV breathed his last on Thursday

“King Oyo impressed me as a dignified and respected leader, and he will be missed,” Johnson added.

He also offered prayers and condolences to the late monarch’s family, the people of Tooro and the wider Ugandan nation as they mourn his passing.

“My prayers are with his family, the Tooro people, and the nation of Uganda during this time of mourning,” Johnson said.

King Oyo, who became Omukama of Tooro at the age of three in 1995, was one of Africa’s youngest reigning monarchs for much of his reign. His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from Ugandans, cultural institutions and leaders at home and abroad.

The Tooro Kingdom has since assured the public that the continuity of the institution of the Omukama is guaranteed, with the late king having left behind a prince whose identity is expected to be formally revealed at an appropriate time in accordance with Tooro traditions and customs.

Johnson’s tribute adds an international dimension to the mourning, highlighting the relationships King Oyo built during his reign beyond Uganda and the African continent.
