The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has withdrawn its earlier endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

In a statement dated May 12, 2026, and signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, MP, the party said the decision follows fresh guidance from the PLU Chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

According to the statement, Gen. Kainerugaba directed that the endorsement earlier issued on March 11, 2026, backing Among and Tayebwa be “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”

The PLU further instructed its Members of Parliament-elect to support candidates that will officially be presented by President Yoweri Museveni for the two parliamentary leadership positions.

“The Leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda encourages its Hon. Members Elect to support the candidates that will be presented to them by H.E the President for the position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” the statement reads in part.

The development signals a potentially significant shift in the race for the leadership of the incoming 12th Parliament, amid growing political consultations within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and its allied structures ahead of the swearing-in of the new House.

The statement also reaffirmed loyalty to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s leadership, saying PLU members are expected to follow the “command, instructions and guidance” of the chairman at all times.

The withdrawal of support is likely to intensify speculation over possible new candidates for the influential Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions.
