President Yoweri Museveni has called on leaders and citizens in the Lango sub-region to move beyond the election season and concentrate on implementing government programmes aimed at transforming livelihoods.

Speaking at Lango College in Lira City on Saturday, Museveni thanked the people of Lango for what he described as overwhelming support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), framing the outcome as a renewed mandate to deliver on key national priorities.

“Now that the campaigns and elections are over, let us focus on implementing government programmes that move our people out of poverty, improve infrastructure and fight corruption,” Museveni said.

The President extended appreciation to a wide range of stakeholders, including cultural leaders, political actors, the business community, and academia, for their role in backing the ruling party. He emphasized that unity across these sectors would be critical in driving socio-economic transformation.

Earlier in the day, Museveni paid a courtesy visit to the family of Mzee Anthony Ocwet and Mrs. Carollin Akullu Ocwet, using the occasion to reflect on Uganda’s turbulent past. He noted that their family’s history is emblematic of the broader national experience during the 1960s and 1970s, when sectarian politics forced many skilled Ugandans into exile.

The President said his government has, over the years, worked to address such historical injustices. He cited the case of Joseph Ocwet, who was once blocked by Parliament over citizenship concerns despite being appointed Uganda’s ambassador to Ethiopia.

Museveni explained that government intervention led to clarification of the law, enabling Ocwet to serve the country.

“He has since served Uganda with distinction,” Museveni noted, pointing to the importance of inclusive governance and fair legal frameworks.

The President’s visit to Lango comes at a time when the government is under increasing pressure to accelerate service delivery, particularly in infrastructure development, poverty alleviation, and anti-corruption efforts.

Leaders in the region have welcomed the President’s message but stress that tangible results will be key in sustaining public confidence beyond the electoral cycle.
