Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Haji Abubaker Jeje Odongo, on Friday had a phone call with his Venezuelan counterpart, Yván Eduardo Gil Pinto, in which they agreed to to strengthen bilateral cooperation and prepare for the upcoming first session of the Uganda-Venezuela Joint Commission.

In a post on Instagram, Minister Gil Pinto described the discussion as “constructive,” noting that both sides pledged their mutual commitment to advancing cooperation in critical sectors such as politics, culture, education, and energy. The two ministers emphasized the importance of translating diplomatic goodwill into practical agreements that benefit both countries.

The call also highlighted Venezuela’s support for Uganda’s leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), where it currently serves as chair. Gil Pinto stated Caracas’ “firm commitment to Uganda in its role as president of NAM,” highlighting the need to strengthen multilateralism and South-South cooperation.

The ministers further emphasized their shared position as members of the Group of Friends in Defence of the United Nations Charter, a bloc that promotes respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and international law in global affairs.

Friday’s exchange is a renewed momentum in Venezuela-Uganda relations, with the planned Joint Commission expected to institutionalize bilateral ties and facilitate the signing of cooperation frameworks.
