Wrong Courses, Wrong Choices – Museveni Blames Skills Mismatch for Unemployment

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on Ugandans, particularly the youth, to make informed career choices aligned with market demands, emphasizing that unemployment in the country is largely driven by poor decision-making rather than a lack of opportunities.

Speaking during the International Labour Day celebrations held at Nkoyoyo Boarding Primary School grounds in Matale, Buikwe District, the President urged learners to pursue courses that are relevant to Uganda’s evolving job market.

Museveni revealed that he has directed the Ministry of Education to provide clearer guidance to students in selecting academic programs that match national development needs.

He also encouraged those who may have pursued less relevant courses to consider retooling in more practical and market-driven fields.

The President further stressed the importance of productivity as the foundation of wealth creation, urging Ugandans to make better use of available land resources. He noted that even small plots of land, such as four acres or less, can generate significant income if utilized through intensive agriculture.

He cautioned against what he described as “working haphazardly” and instead called for proper planning and discipline in economic activities.

On access to capital, Museveni advised citizens to avoid high-interest loans from commercial banks and instead take advantage of government-supported financing options such as the Parish Development Model and the Uganda Development Bank, which offer more affordable funding to support wealth creation initiatives.

Highlighting Uganda’s industrial progress, Museveni attributed the establishment of over 5,000 factories to sustained peace and stability in the country. He emphasized that with discipline, strategic choices, and hard work, Uganda is well-positioned to continue expanding job opportunities and achieving economic prosperity.
