Who Is Melat Kiros? Ethiopian-Born Socialist Wins Colorado Congressional Seat
November 4, 2026
DENVER, United States — Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old Democratic socialist born in Ethiopia, has won election to the United States House of Representatives, marking a major political breakthrough for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Kiros defeated Republican candidate Christy Peterson and independent challenger Shimon Blau in the November 3, 2026, election to represent Colorado's 1st Congressional District, which covers Denver and surrounding areas.
She will become the first Black woman and first member of Generation Z to represent Colorado in Congress.
Her victory follows a surprise win in the Democratic primary in June, when she defeated longtime congresswoman Diana DeGette, who had represented the district since 1997.
Born in Ethiopia, Kiros moved to Denver with her family as an infant. She studied at Washington College before earning a law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2022.
She subsequently worked as a corporate lawyer in New York before returning to Colorado, where she became involved in progressive activism.
Kiros' political journey gained momentum after she published an open letter in 2023 criticising efforts by major US law firms to equate criticism of Israel with antisemitism. She said she was fired from her legal job after refusing to withdraw the letter.
Her campaign was built around economic affordability, universal healthcare, housing and reducing corporate influence in American politics.
Kiros has advocated for Medicare for All, universal childcare and elder care, publicly financed elections and a ban on corporate political action committee donations.
Her outspoken criticism of Israel's military campaign in Gaza also became a defining issue in her campaign, drawing support from progressive activists while attracting criticism from some Jewish community leaders.
Her victory reflects growing support among Democratic voters for younger, left-wing candidates challenging established party figures.
Kiros is expected to take office in January 2027, joining a new generation of progressive lawmakers seeking to reshape the Democratic Party's direction in Congress.
