Uganda is bracing for a serious diplomatic confrontation with the United States following a public statement by the Commander of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in which he accused the current US Ambassador William Popp, of disrespecting President Yoweri Museveni and undermining the country’s constitution.
In a tweet shared widely on social media, Gen. Kainerugaba issued a stern warning, expressing outrage over the ambassador’s actions, without specifying details of the alleged transgression. He described the situation as a matter of national pride and sovereignty, calling for a firm response.
“Fellow Ugandans, it is my solemn duty to announce to you all that we as a nation are about to have a serious confrontation with the current US Ambassador to our country. For disrespecting our beloved and celebrated President and for undermining the constitution of Uganda,” Gen. Kainerugaba tweeted.
The statement immediately sparked public and diplomatic discussions, with analysts speculating on the nature of the alleged interference. Relations between Uganda and the United States have been cordial but tense in recent years, with disagreements over governance, human rights, and Uganda’s controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act, which drew significant criticism from Washington.
