Vice President Jessica Alupo (L) held talks with Cuba's Ambassador to Uganda, H.E Juan Humberto Macías Pino

Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo has held talks with the Ambassador of Cuba to Uganda, Juan Humberto Macías Pino, in a meeting that highlighted the long-standing friendship and growing cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the historical ties binding Uganda and Cuba, with a focus on strengthening existing cooperation programmes across key sectors.

They also took stock of recent high-level exchanges between officials of both governments, which were described as successful and mutually beneficial.

Ambassador Macías Pino reiterated Cuba’s appreciation for Uganda’s consistent diplomatic support on the international stage, particularly Kampala’s backing of the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning the decades-long economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.

Uganda has over the years voted in favour of the annual UN resolution calling for an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba, in line with the overwhelming majority of the international community that views the sanctions as unjust and harmful to the Cuban people.

The meeting saw the two pledge commitment of both governments to further deepen bilateral relations, expand cooperation, and maintain close coordination on regional and global issues of shared interest.
