Uganda has pledged its solidarity with Cuba following high-level discussions between the two countries focused on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), historical ties, and opposition to unilateral coercive measures.
H.E. Juan Humberto Magas Pino, Cuba’s Ambassador to Uganda, paid a courtesy call on Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs, Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, in Kampala on Thursday.
The meeting centered on cooperation within the Non-Aligned Movement and the longstanding historical relationship between Cuba and African nations.
Amb. Pino highlighted Cuba’s enduring support for African liberation struggles and independence movements, recalling Havana’s contribution to the fight against apartheid in South Africa and broader anti-colonial efforts across the continent. He reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to African sovereignty and resistance against external domination.
During the discussions, Hon. Oryem referenced the 2024 Kampala Summit Declaration of the Non-Aligned Movement and United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/209 on Human Rights and Unilateral Coercive Measures, which was tabled by NAM member states and adopted by 122 countries in December 2025. The resolution calls for an end to unilateral sanctions that are deemed inconsistent with international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
Hon. Oryem reiterated the importance of African solidarity with Cuba, particularly in light of the longstanding United States economic embargo against Havana. He emphasized that nations within the Movement must continue to stand together in defense of sovereignty, multilateralism, and non-interference.
“We stand in solidarity with nations like Cuba and peoples subjected to unilateral coercive measures, particularly those from our Movement,” Oryem said.
The Ugandan minister further reaffirmed Kampala’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its special relationship with Havana, highlighting decades of cooperation in areas including health, education, and technical exchange.
Uganda and Cuba have maintained close diplomatic ties grounded in shared historical experiences of anti-colonial struggle and a mutual commitment to South-South cooperation.
