Uganda Orders Immediate Closure of DRC Border Over Ebola Threat

Uganda’s National Task Force on epidemics has ordered the immediate closure of the country’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as authorities intensify measures to prevent further spread of Ebola.

The decision, announced as part of the country’s ongoing outbreak response, marks one of the strongest containment steps taken so far following confirmation of imported Ebola cases linked to cross-border movement from the DRC.

Officials said the border closure takes effect immediately and is aimed at strengthening surveillance and limiting the risk of additional imported infections as health teams continue contact tracing, screening and monitoring of suspected cases.

The move comes days after the Ministry of Health confirmed several Ebola cases tied to the initial imported case, triggering heightened public health response measures across the country.

Uganda and the DRC share a long and busy border used daily by traders, transporters and communities on both sides, meaning the closure is expected to significantly affect movement and cross-border business.

Authorities have maintained that Uganda’s response remains focused on rapid detection, isolation, contact tracing and public awareness, while urging the public to remain calm and continue observing preventive measures.

Government is expected to issue further guidance on how the border closure will be implemented, including whether cargo movement, humanitarian access, and essential travel will be exempted.
