Uganda, Iraq hold First Consultative Meeting In Bid To Cement Diplomatic Relations

Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, hosted Mr. Ghazi Ktab, Director of the Africa Department at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Kampala today.

This inaugural consultative dialogue between Uganda and Iraq is aimed at bolstering diplomatic ties and fostering mutual cooperation.

Gen. Odongo, accompanied by Amb. Phillip Odida, Director for Regional and International Political Affairs, welcomed the initiative, underlining the significance of establishing a consistent and mutually beneficial relationship. Recognizing their shared experiences as members of the global south, both sides emphasized the necessity of a partnership rooted in common understanding and objectives.

Mr. Ghazi acknowledged Iraq’s historic diplomatic relations with African nations, acknowledging the impact of prolonged conflict on these ties. Mr. Ktab highlighted Iraq’s resurgence and its potential role in promoting peace and security in the Middle East.

During the meeting, Mr. Ktab briefed Gen. Odongo on Iraq’s ambitious Road Development Project, aiming to connect Asia and Europe through an extensive network of infrastructure.

This project, linking the Grand Faw Port to Turkey’s border and beyond, has garnered support from various countries, including Turkey, Qatar, and the UAE. Mr. Ktab extended an invitation to Uganda to participate in the project, offering opportunities for industrial growth along the network.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda anticipates further engagements with Iraq to solidify this promising relationship, exploring avenues for cooperation that will benefit both nations.
