Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has commended the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, for his leadership in advancing the country’s role as Chair of the Group of 77 and China (G77+China).

Uganda assumed this prestigious position eight months ago, marking a critical moment in its international diplomacy efforts.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday morning, President Museveni expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Ayebare for his commitment to representing the Global South, particularly in spearheading key global conversations around climate change and the ongoing negotiations for the Pact for the Future.

“Yesterday, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare briefed me on the progress of Uganda’s Chairmanship of the G77+China, eight months since we assumed office. I thank him for representing the Global South well, especially in leading the conversations around climate change and the conclusion of the Pact for the Future,” President Museveni posted.

President Museveni further revealed that he had received a message from the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, highlighting the close cooperation between Uganda and the United Nations during its chairmanship. While the details of the message were not disclosed, it is seen as a testament to the UN’s support of Uganda’s leadership on pressing global issues.

Uganda’s Role in Global Diplomacy

Uganda’s chairmanship of the G77+China, an influential coalition of 134 developing countries, is seen as key for the country to champion issues important to the Global South. The group’s agenda includes climate action, sustainable development, and addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by developing nations.

Ambassador Ayebare has been instrumental in leading Uganda’s participation at the UN level, particularly during critical negotiations on climate change, where developing nations continue to advocate for climate justice and financial support from developed countries.

Focus on Climate Change and the Pact for the Future

President Museveni highlighted Uganda’s role in promoting discussions on climate change, one of the most pressing challenges for developing countries. As Chair of the G77+China, Uganda has played a central role in pushing for equitable solutions, including increased financial aid for climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The Pact for the Future, an ambitious global framework currently under negotiation, is aimed at addressing long-term global challenges, including climate change, poverty eradication, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Uganda, through its chairmanship, has been vocal about ensuring that the voices of developing countries are heard and that the Pact reflects the realities faced by these nations.
