ISTANBUL, TURKIYE | June 21, 2025 — Uganda has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling them “unprovoked aggression” and part of a broader scheme targeting the Muslim world and humanity at large.
Speaking at the 51st Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, Uganda’s Foreign Minister Hon. Gen. Jeje Odongo described the Israeli strikes as a blatant violation of international law and an attack on Iranian sovereignty.
“As we gather in this Hall, we are confronted with yet another case of blatant aggression on a Member State — the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Gen. Odongo said.
“The unprovoked attack on the sovereign people of Iran by Israel is part of a wider scheme targeting the Muslim world and innocent humanity by sections of the international community who have no respect for international law, and carry out despicable acts against others with impunity.”
Uganda aligned itself with several other OIC member states in condemning the strikes, calling for immediate de-escalation and diplomatic resolution.
“I wish to join other speakers before me in condemning the unwarranted aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran and call for an immediate halt to these attacks,” Gen. Odongo said. “I also reiterate the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to self-defence and urge all peace-loving members of the international community to work towards ending this unprovoked act of aggression through diplomacy and dialogue.”
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, as Israel and Iran trade accusations and conduct retaliatory operations. Uganda’s statement reflects deep concern within the Muslim world that the conflict is part of a growing trend of disregard for Muslim nations and values, fueling instability across regions.
Uganda’s stance, delivered in a packed conference hall in Istanbul, was consistent with the broader theme of the summit — “The OIC in a Transforming World” — which seeks to respond to the complex challenges facing the Muslim Ummah in an increasingly volatile global environment.
Uganda, though a Christian-majority country, has long maintained diplomatic relations with Muslim nations and is host to the Islamic University in Uganda, which is supported by the OIC. The country’s voice at such international forums continues to highlight its alignment with principles of sovereignty, peace, and justice.
