UPDF Land Forces Commander Lt Gen Kaynja Muhanga (L) with RDF's Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi
The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) hosted a high-level meeting with the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) in Mbarara District, aimed at enhancing cross-border cooperation and curbing illegal activities along the Uganda-Rwanda border.
Saturday’s meeting brought together key military leaders from both countries to discuss strategies for addressing the challenges faced by border communities and ensuring the safety and security of the region.
The UPDF delegation, led by Maj Gen James Birungi, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, warmly welcomed Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, the RDF’s Army Chief of Staff, who led the Rwandan delegation. The discussions focused on combating cross-border crimes and fostering collaboration between the two nations’ military forces.
Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, UPDF Land Forces Commander and Chief Guest at the event, praised the efforts of both Uganda and Rwanda in maintaining security along their shared border. He emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation under the leadership of the Heads of State, President Yoweri Museveni and President Paul Kagame.
“Under the guidance and commitment of the two Heads of State, we have conducted various meetings to address security challenges, particularly along the border. This initiative will undoubtedly foster harmony between our nations and ensure social transformation and prosperity,” Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga remarked.
Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, representing the RDF Chief of Defence Staff, expressed his gratitude for the UPDF’s commitment to tackling illegal cross-border activities. He assured that the RDF would continue to work closely with the UPDF to deter cross-border crimes and violent extremism, strengthening the security of the region.
As part of their visit, the Rwandan delegation also paid courtesy calls to the Chairpersons of Kabare and Ntungamo Districts, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation between the two nations.
The previous meeting between the UPDF and RDF was held in May this year in Nyagatare District, Eastern Rwanda, further demonstrating the ongoing commitment to border security and cooperation between Uganda and Rwanda.
