Uganda and Cuba Pledge to Strengthen Interparliamentary Ties in Historic Meeting

The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Anita Annet Among, hosted a high-profile meeting with Cuba’s Vice President, Salvador Valdes Mesa, at her office in Kampala on Monday, January 22, 2024. The meeting aimed to enhance interparliamentary cooperation and foster closer ties between the two nations.

Vice President Valdes conveyed the keen interest of Cuba’s National Assembly in strengthening interparliamentary relations through robust exchanges facilitated by Friendship Groups within the legislatures of both countries. The discussions between the two leaders emphasized the importance of mutual understanding, collaboration, and shared values.

The meeting also featured the participation of prominent officials from both sides. Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez, played a pivotal role in underlining the commitment of his country to deepen ties with Uganda. Additionally, Ambassador Tania Perez Xiques and a distinguished Cuban delegation were present to further solidify the diplomatic engagement.

On the Ugandan side, Members of Parliament, including the notable presence of Dr. Charles Ayume, were active participants in the discussions. The Ugandan delegation expressed their eagerness to explore avenues for cooperation and friendship, aiming to strengthen the bonds between the two nations. Uganda’s Ambassador to Cuba, H.E Elizabeth Musaazi was also present in the meeting.

The discussions encompassed a range of topics, including economic cooperation, health partnerships, and educational initiatives. Both sides expressed a commitment to exploring new avenues for collaboration and building on the existing foundation of friendship between Uganda and Cuba.

As the meeting concluded, Speaker Anita Annet Among and Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa jointly affirmed their dedication to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region through strengthened interparliamentary ties.
