The U.S. Embassy in Kampala has issued a security advisory to its citizens, warning of potential risks in Uganda’s western border districts due to escalating conflict in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement, the embassy highlighted concerns over the possible spillover effects of the unrest, urging U.S. citizens in the region to exercise increased caution. The alert follows a surge in violence inside the DRC, where armed groups continue to battle government forces and each other, leading to instability near the border areas.

The embassy advised U.S. nationals to remain vigilant, avoid large public gatherings, and maintain a low profile while in the affected areas. Additionally, travelers were encouraged to review their personal security plans and ensure their travel documents are up to date.

“U.S. citizens should remain alert and take appropriate precautions when in western border districts,” the statement read. “We strongly advise enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely alerts and facilitate assistance in case of emergencies.”

The warning comes amid growing tensions in eastern DRC, where armed conflicts have led to mass displacements and heightened security concerns for neighboring countries, including Uganda. Authorities in Kampala have yet to issue a formal response, but security forces are reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
