As the world draws the curtain on 2025, the year will be remembered as one marked by protracted wars, deepening humanitarian crises, high-stakes diplomacy, and a growing struggle over global order.

At the centre of international attention was the war in Gaza, which continued to dominate headlines amid intense fighting, repeated ceasefire attempts, and a worsening humanitarian catastrophe. International pressure mounted over civilian casualties, access for humanitarian agencies, and allegations of violations of international law, keeping the Israel-Palestine conflict at the heart of global diplomacy.

Equally devastating was Sudan’s civil war, now widely regarded as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces led to mass displacement, famine conditions, and reports of ethnic massacres, particularly in Darfur. The conflict exposed major gaps in international response and funding, despite repeated UN warnings.

In addition to this was the Eastern DRC conflict that saw M23 rebels capture Goma City, setting into motion efforts to curtail the conflict. These efforts culminated into the Doha and Washington Agreement and Peace Accords respectively.

The Russia–Ukraine war entered another grinding year, with no decisive military breakthrough and continued attacks on infrastructure, energy facilities, and grain routes. The conflict continued to reshape European security, global food markets, and relations between Russia and the West.

In Asia, rising tensions between China, Taiwan, and the United States fuelled fears of a wider confrontation in the Indo-Pacific. Beijing’s military drills and Washington’s support for Taipei reinforced concerns about a potential flashpoint with global consequences.

2025 witnessed a historic religious moment with the election of a new Pope, following the passing of Pope Francis. The conclave and emergence of new leadership (election of Pope Leo) at the Vatican captured worldwide attention, signaling a new chapter for the Catholic Church and its role in global moral, social, and diplomatic affairs.

Climate change also took centre stage as 2025 ranked among the hottest years on record, intensifying floods, droughts, and extreme weather events across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These concerns culminated at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, where negotiations exposed sharp divisions between developed and developing nations over climate financing and emissions targets.

Africa made diplomatic history by hosting the G20 Summit in South Africa, the first ever on the continent. The summit spotlighted Africa’s growing geopolitical relevance while also revealing fractures among major powers on debt relief, development financing, and global governance reforms.

Meanwhile, a growing global humanitarian funding crisis strained international relief efforts, particularly in conflict zones such as Sudan, Gaza, Ukraine, and parts of the Sahel, raising alarm among aid agencies.

In the Middle East beyond Gaza, regional realignments and tensions among Gulf states signaled shifting alliances, while fragile ceasefires and diplomatic initiatives underscored a region still far from stability.

Collectively, the events of 2025 underscored a world grappling with persistent conflict, climate urgency, and a contested international order, leaving many of the year’s defining crises unresolved as 2026 begins.
