Street Named After Ex Foreign Affairs Minister & UNGA Pres. Kutesa

Former Foreign Affairs Minister and former President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Hon. Sam Kutesa, has been honored by his home district of Sembabule with the naming of a street and the District Administration Block in recognition of his decades of public service to Uganda and the international community.

The recognition was announced following a thanksgiving ceremony held in Sembabule, where district leaders, residents, family members and supporters gathered to celebrate Kutesa’s contribution to the district and the nation.

According to his daughter, Sembabule Woman MP Hon. Shartsi Musherure, the district leadership dedicated the two public landmarks to Kutesa in appreciation of his “inspirational service and outstanding contributions to Sembabule District and Uganda.”

“We are deeply humbled by the love, goodwill, and unwavering support that the people of Sembabule continue to show him,” Musherure said, adding that the recognition reflected the district’s gratitude for his lifelong commitment to public service.

For Uganda’s diplomatic history, the honor carries particular significance.

Kutesa served as Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs for many years and, in 2014, was elected President of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, becoming the first Ugandan to preside over the world’s most representative diplomatic forum. During his tenure, he chaired deliberations involving all UN member states on global peace, sustainable development, international security and multilateral cooperation.

His leadership at the United Nations elevated Uganda’s diplomatic profile and remains one of the country’s most notable achievements in international diplomacy.

The latest recognition in Sembabule therefore not only celebrates his local development legacy but also acknowledges his contribution to projecting Uganda onto the global diplomatic stage.

Musherure expressed gratitude to the people and leadership of Sembabule for the gesture, saying Kutesa’s dedication to serving both his constituents and Uganda should continue inspiring future generations.

“May his passionate service to his people and to our country continue to inspire us all to work towards the transformation and prosperity of our people and our nation,” she said.

The naming of public infrastructure after national leaders is among the highest civic honors bestowed by local governments, preserving their legacy for generations while recognizing exceptional service to their communities and the nation.
