Ms Kiir Adut, South Sudan’s Senior Presidential Envoy for Special Programmes (R) with newly appointed Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hon. Mabior Garang Mabior
South Sudan’s Senior Presidential Envoy for Special Programmes, Kiir Adut, has held a brief but symbolic courtesy meeting with the country’s newly appointed Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hon. Mabior Garang Mabior, signalling strengthened cooperation at the highest levels of government on environmental protection and climate resilience.
Kiir Adut, daughter of President Salva Kiir and appointed to her current role in August, announced the engagement in a statement highlighting mutual respect and shared national priorities. The meeting was conducted in a standing, informal tête-à-tête, reflecting both cordiality and urgency in advancing South Sudan’s environmental agenda.
“I sincerely congratulated Minister Mabior on his new appointment and expressed my readiness to work closely with him in advancing our national environmental priorities,” she said.
Hon. Mabior, son of the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior, South Sudan’s founding father—assumed office earlier this week in a major government reshuffle that also saw the appointment of a new Vice President. His entry into the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is widely viewed as a strategic move to strengthen policy leadership in areas critical to South Sudan’s development and stability.
According to Kiir Adut, the two leaders share a deep commitment to enhancing cooperation in climate resilience, sustainable forestry, ecosystem protection, and broader environmental governance, especially at a time when the country faces increased climate-related threats such as flooding, drought, and land degradation.
The meeting underscores renewed momentum within the government toward addressing environmental challenges and improving coordination between high-level offices.
As South Sudan continues to navigate both internal reforms and pressing climate impacts, the collaboration between Kiir Adut and Minister Mabior is expected to shape key programmes aimed at protecting communities and strengthening environmental sustainability nationwide.
