Rwanda Speaks Out on Allegations of Sexual Violence by Peacekeepers in Central African Republic

The Rwandan Ministry of Defence has strongly denied allegations made in The New Humanitarian and Le Monde accusing Rwandan peacekeepers of rape and sexual violence in the Central African Republic (CAR).

According to the Ministry, the claims are false, highlighting that no Rwandan peacekeepers were stationed in Paoua or Ndassima, where some of the alleged incidents took place.

“Sexual violence against civilians by peacekeepers is unacceptable and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) takes every accusation against its troops seriously,” the statement says in part.

Additionally, the Ministry stated that the base in Bangui mentioned in the reports does not admit unregistered civilians.

The Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) reiterated its commitment to the integrity and professionalism of its troops, who have been actively involved in peacekeeping missions for over 20 years.

It has also emphasized that no such incidents could have occurred and that, according to local testimonies, sexual assaults had decreased since the deployment of Rwandan forces.

Rwanda remains dedicated to supporting peace and stability in CAR and other regions where its peacekeepers are stationed.

Any accusations against RDF personnel are taken seriously and will be investigated, though the Ministry firmly asserts that the recent allegations are unfounded.
