The Government of Rwanda has condemned a recent surge in what it calls politically motivated media attacks targeting the country.
Amidst preparations for forthcoming presidential and legislative elections, Rwandan officials and citizens have been subjected to a barrage of allegations in the media.
In a firm rebuttal, the Rwandan government says the reports and allegations do no warrant a response as Kigali has previously done so.
“We have declined to engage with the re-hashed accusations because we have already addressed them repeatedly,” the government statement issued on Tuesday says.
It adds, “Rwandans have come to expect this kind of media flurry by the usual actors, timed to disrupt our upcoming presidential and legislative elections.”
The statement has also condemned efforts along its western border to shield the genocidal militia FDLR, which it says, serves to undermine regional stability and promote the agenda of those advocating for “regime change” in the Democratic Republic of Congo, accusing President Felix Tshisekedi of making the comments.
Despite these challenges, Rwanda reaffirms its commitment to democratic principles and the peaceful conduct of elections.
“Rwanda’s democratic processes will continue, and Rwandans will make their choices about who they want to lead them into the future, peacefully and confidently.” the statement says.
General elections are due to be held in Rwanda on 15 July 2024 to elect the president and members of the Chamber of Deputies.
