Kenyan President Dr. William Samoei Ruto has held discussions with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice-President Riek Machar concerning the escalating security situation in South Sudan. The diplomatic engagement underscores Kenya’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in the East African region.

In an official statement released from State House, Nairobi, President Ruto revealed that he had urged both leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting national unity. The discussion comes as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) intensifies efforts to stabilize South Sudan under its Strategic Framework.

“I implored both leaders to engage in dialogue towards fostering peace in the country even as the region works towards the stabilization of South Sudan under IGAD’s Strategic Framework,” President Ruto said.

He further noted that regional consultations are currently underway to explore the most viable path forward for South Sudan, signaling increased diplomatic efforts among neighboring countries to prevent further unrest.

South Sudan has struggled with political and ethnic tensions since gaining independence in 2011, with intermittent conflicts between forces loyal to Kiir and Machar. The recent uptick in tensions has raised concerns about a potential derailment of the fragile peace process.
