Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has lauded the longstanding cooperation between Uganda and the United States, emphasizing the need to further strengthen their bilateral partnership.
Gen. Kainerugaba made these remarks during a meeting with the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. William Popp, at the Special Forces Headquarters in Entebbe on Wednesday. Ambassador Popp was accompanied by the U.S. Military Attaché to Uganda, Lt. Col. Christian Noumba.
Highlighting the deep-rooted history of collaboration between the two nations, Gen. Kainerugaba stressed the importance of maintaining and enhancing this relationship.
“Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1962, Uganda and the United States have cooperated across various sectors, including diplomacy, security, economy, health, and culture. Our partnership is built on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and development,” he stated.
He also underscored the cultural and historical ties between Uganda and the U.S., noting that the large African American population in the U.S. makes it a natural ally of Uganda and Africa.
The CDF acknowledged U.S. support in Uganda’s development, recognizing the benefits derived from various American initiatives. He reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening cooperation, saying, “Together, we have made significant progress, and I am confident that our partnership will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead. Let us reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and the well-being of our people.”
Ambassador Popp, in turn, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to deepen U.S.-Uganda relations. He commended Uganda’s leadership in regional security, particularly in Somalia, where the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have played a pivotal role in countering terrorism. Additionally, he praised Uganda’s open refugee policy, which has provided sanctuary to thousands fleeing conflict and instability.
