Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for the resignation of Noordin Haji, the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS). This follows the widespread and violent protests triggered by the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

“The security sector was caught off-guard by the intensity of the protests. Had NIS DG Noordin Haji done his job, we would not be where we are today,” Deputy President Gachagua stated, expressing his frustration over the failure to anticipate and manage the unrest.

The protests, which have led to loss of life and significant destruction of public and private property, have shaken the nation. Deputy President Gachagua voiced his empathy for those affected, including members of parliament who have faced traumatic experiences both within and outside the parliamentary premises. “The loss and destruction of public and private property is unfortunate. I empathize with MPs for the traumatic experience in and out of Parliament. Kenyans will have the opportunity to express their displeasure in the next General Election,” he said.

Reflecting on the human toll, Gachagua expressed deep sorrow for the young lives lost during the protests. “My children are of the same Gen Z. No parent should have to bury their child, especially in such circumstances. I cry for our children; I am unable to bear the pain of innocent young children whose only crime was to air their views in a democratic country,” he lamented.

Deputy President Gachagua’s call for accountability comes amid heightened tensions and a critical moment for Kenya’s leadership. His statements underscore the urgent need for effective security management and responsive governance in addressing the concerns of the public and preventing future crises.
