Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Surgery to Remove Lung Nodule, Vatican Says
October 11, 2026
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV is set to undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a localized nodule in his lung, following medical examinations that detected the growth at an early stage, according to a statement reported by Vatican News.
The Pope said doctors discovered the nodule during recent medical examinations and recommended surgery as the appropriate course of action.
“Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, doctors found a localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized,” Pope Leo XIV said.
He added that he had decided to follow the medical team's advice and proceed with the operation, which has already been scheduled for the coming days.
“The doctors believe surgery is appropriate. Following their advice, I have therefore decided to undergo an operation to remove it,” he said.
The pontiff also expressed gratitude for the support and prayers of the faithful as he prepares for the procedure.
“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers,” he added.
The statement did not specify the exact date of the operation or provide further details about the nature of the lung nodule.
A lung nodule is a small, localized growth in the lung that can have several causes. Its detection does not, by itself, establish a diagnosis of cancer.
Further updates on the Pope's condition and recovery are expected as more information becomes available.
