The Parliament of Uganda has suspended the nomination process for the by-election of Uganda’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), citing unspecified reasons.

In an official notice issued on March 28, 2026, the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, announced that the exercise—previously scheduled for March 30 and 31—has been halted “until further notice.”

“Notice is hereby given that nomination of Members for the by-election of Uganda’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly earlier scheduled for 30th and 31st March 2026 has been suspended until further notice,” the statement reads.

The abrupt suspension introduces fresh uncertainty into the already competitive race for Uganda’s EALA slots, which has attracted interest from political actors across party lines. NRM Electoral Commission had nominated 32 candidates to participate in the by-election.

No explanation was provided for the decision, and it remains unclear when the nomination process will resume.

The development is expected to trigger political consultations within parties, particularly the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), as aspirants reassess their strategies amid the delay.
