NRM’s Lukanga Urges Youth to Embrace Free Speech at PYPA Program In Kenya’s

Last week, Kenya played host to the Program For Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA), a prestigious initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of political leaders across the continent.

The sessions took place at the Mombasa Continental Resort from 17-26 May, bringing together 45 participants from 19 political parties from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

PYPA, implemented by the Christian Democratic International Center (KIC), is supported by three prominent Swedish partners: the Center Party’s International Foundation, Olof Palme’s International Center, and the Green Forum, alongside three local partners.

The PYPA program is a multi-party, international political leadership initiative that seeks to build the capacity of young female and male political leaders from 16 African countries. The core objective of the program is to enhance youth participation and influence within political parties while also promoting democracy and rights.

This year’s program brought together vibrant young leaders who are poised to make significant impacts in their respective countries. Among the participants was Samuel Lukanga, representing Uganda. Lukanga, like his peers, engaged in a series of workshops, discussions, and training sessions designed to equip them with essential skills for effective political leadership and advocacy.

“This is the first time in years that the future of our world has looked so volatile and unpredictable. We need young people to take an active role in politics. However, we do not need them to be convinced that they’re right and blocked off to the possibility that they aren’t,” Lukanga said.

We need conversation, dialogue, free speech and debate. If you can encourage those things, starting with yourself, you’re on the road to contributing to this digital age of politics and helping to alleviating suffering around the world.”

He was part of the group that represented Uganda’s ruling NRM party.

During the program, participants delved into various critical topics, including democratic governance, human rights, political campaigning, and strategic communication. The interactive sessions provided a platform for young leaders to exchange ideas, share experiences, and forge networks that will support their political careers and advocacy efforts back home.

The Christian Democratic International Center, along with its Swedish and local partners, emphasized the importance of such programs in fostering a new generation of politically active youth who are committed to the principles of democracy and human rights.

The representatives from the Center Party’s International Foundation, Olof Palme’s International Center, and the Green Forum reiterated their commitment to supporting young politicians in Africa.
