Rwandan music lovers will have to wait longer to see Nigerian music sensation Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, after the artist canceled her highly anticipated concert in Kigali.

The decision comes amid escalating tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a development the singer admitted she was unaware of before promoting the event.

Tems, known for her soulful voice and global hits, was set to perform in Rwanda on March 22, 2024. However, after realizing the geopolitical sensitivity surrounding the ongoing conflict between the two neighboring nations, she took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to apologize and announce the cancellation.

“I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way. I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected. Conflict is no joke and I truly hope and pray for peace in this time,” she posted.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions online. While many fans praised her for taking a considerate stance, others expressed disappointment over the cancellation. Some Rwandan fans had already secured tickets and were looking forward to the performance.

Tensions between Rwanda and the DRC have been on the rise in recent months, with diplomatic disputes and security concerns dominating regional headlines. The situation has led to strained relations, impacting economic, political, and even social engagements between the two countries.
