The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s preparations for the 2026 general elections took an unexpected turn today when Prosper Kururagire, the influential NRM chairman for Mbarara District, openly mobilized support for Nzeire Shadrack Kaguta, the younger brother of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The high-level meeting, convened at the party’s headquarters in Kampala to plan for the forthcoming National Delegates’ Conference, was officially chaired by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong.
While the day’s agenda centered on unveiling President Museveni’s campaign portrait, Kururagire shifted the spotlight by attempting to rally delegates behind Nzeire, who is contesting for the influential post of NRM Vice Chairperson (Western Region) on the Central Executive Committee (CEC).
A prominent businessman and one of Museveni’s most trusted grassroots mobilizers, Kururagire was seen moving alongside Nzeire from delegate to delegate, appealing for their support.
Delegates confided that his reputation as a loyal cadre and “money magnete” in western Uganda gives his word considerable weight within party structures.
Observers described Kururagire’s move as both tactical and calculated.
Fresh from being re-elected unopposed as Mbarara District chairman, he has consolidated himself as a political powerhouse whose endorsement could tilt the balance in Nzeire’s favor.
Supporters argue that Nzeire’s bid goes beyond family ties to the President, pointing to his potential to unify the party base and channel government development closer to communities in western Uganda that feel neglected.
As the NRM intensifies preparations for its internal elections, Kururagire’s intervention underscores a well-coordinated effort to secure Nzeire’s victory in the western region CEC race.
The outcome is expected to shape the balance of power within the party and recalibrate western Uganda’s role in the country’s political dynamics heading into 2026.
