Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni and the Facilitator of the East African Community (EAC)-led Nairobi Peace Process, H.E. President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta, met on Wednesday to discuss the evolving situation in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) amidst a joint military offensive.

The leaders convened as a coalition of Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops, in collaboration with the DR Congo army, FARDC launched a robust operation against the M23 rebels. The military campaign aimed at pounding the rebels has yielded significant results, with the recovery of a substantial cache of weapons, further crippling the insurgent group.

Although details of their meeting are still scanty, President Museveni and President Kenyatta, recognizing the urgency of the situation, are believed to have engaged in in-depth discussions on the military campaign’s progress and its implications for regional stability.

The leaders underscored the importance of a unified response to address security challenges in the Great Lakes region.

The joint military efforts, involving SADC troops and the DRC army, have been coordinated to root out the M23 rebels, who have been a source of instability in Eastern DRC. The recovered cache of weapons is seen as a major blow to the rebel group, signaling a significant stride towards restoring peace and security in the affected areas.

As the coalition forces make headway against the M23 rebels, the meeting between Presidents Museveni and Kenyatta serves as a testament to the regional commitment to ensuring peace and security in Eastern Africa.
