Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni recently met with a delegation from China’s National People’s Congress, led by the Standing Committee’s Deputy Chairperson, H.E. Luòsāng Jiāngcūn, at the State House in Entebbe.

During the meeting, President Museveni expressed gratitude for China’s long-standing cooperation across diverse sectors, including Agriculture, Energy, Infrastructure development, and ICT, among others.

“China has been a valuable partner in our nation’s progress, contributing significantly to various sectors crucial for Uganda’s development,” stated President Museveni, acknowledging the pivotal role of Chinese collaboration in fostering growth and advancement.

In particular, Museveni lauded China’s support for advocating reforms within the UN Security Council, specifically emphasizing the push for two permanent seats allocated for Africa. This reform, he highlighted, is a crucial step toward ensuring African representation in global decision-making forums.

President Museveni also addressed the challenge of Africa’s heavy reliance on raw material exports, proposing a strategy to shift toward processed goods. He urged China to consider opening its market further for processed Ugandan products, notably citing processed coffee among others.

“The transformation from raw materials to processed goods is vital for Africa’s economic independence and growth,” emphasized President Museveni, underlining the need for expanded market access to enhance value addition within Uganda’s export portfolio.

The discussions between President Museveni and the Chinese delegation underscored the ongoing cooperation between the two nations and emphasized the significance of strategic collaborations in driving mutual development goals while advocating for Africa’s representation and economic empowerment on the global stage.
