Kiryandongo, Uganda | 22nd October 2025 — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road crash that occurred early Tuesday morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, as police revised the official death toll to 46 fatalities following hospital verification.

The accident, which took place at Kitaleeba Village near Asili Farm in Kiryandongo District at about 12:15 a.m., involved four vehicles — two Isuzu buses (belonging to Nile Star Coaches and Planet Company), a Toyota Surf, and a Tata Lorry.

In a message of condolence, President Museveni said he had learnt “with sadness” about the accident that claimed many lives and injured several others. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and directed the State House Comptroller to provide Shs 5 million to each bereaved family and Shs 1 million to each of the injured.

“I urge all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” Museveni said.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Police Force Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has clarified that the number of confirmed deaths now stands at 46, down from the earlier reported 63.

“Several victims were initially found unconscious and may have been mistakenly included in the earlier fatality count. We are working closely with health and emergency services to ensure accurate and timely updates,” the police said in a statement.

Dozens of survivors remain admitted at Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby health centers. Rescue teams have since completed retrieval operations from the wreckage, as authorities continue investigations into the exact cause of the crash.

The Kampala–Gulu Highway remains one of Uganda’s busiest and deadliest roads, with authorities repeatedly warning motorists against speeding and reckless overtaking, which are leading causes of fatal crashes.
