President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday presided over a landmark Tripartite meeting at the State Lodge in Fort Portal, hosting high-level delegations from the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

The meeting culminated in the signing of a pivotal agreement to launch a transformative 1,100-kilometre Road Project, aimed at boosting cross-border connectivity, trade, and regional cooperation among the three nations.

President Museveni described the initiative as “great news” for the region, underscoring its potential to strengthen not only physical infrastructure but also security and aviation linkages across East and Central Africa.

The tripartite discussions also focused on the Bangu-Kampala Road Infrastructure Project, with leaders outlining key connection points that will serve as trade corridors linking Uganda to the Central African Republic and South Sudan. These routes are expected to facilitate the smoother movement of goods and people, reduce transportation costs, and foster economic resilience among the participating countries.

“We are laying the foundation for a connected and secure region,” President Museveni stated. “Infrastructure is not just about roads; it’s about opportunity, prosperity, and peace.”

The ambitious road project is expected to create jobs, improve access to remote areas, and accelerate development efforts in border regions that have long suffered from underinvestment. Moreover, the tripartite collaboration signifies a growing commitment to intra-African partnerships in line with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Officials from the three countries also discussed enhancing aviation routes to complement the road network and streamline movement for business and tourism.

The Fort Portal meeting builds on a broader vision championed by President Museveni to make Uganda a strategic transport and logistics hub in the region, connecting landlocked countries to regional ports and markets.
