Makerere University has directed all third-year Bachelor of Arts Economics students to attend the upcoming Kampala Geopolitics Conference scheduled for April 15, 2026.

According to an official communication issued by the School of Economics under the College of Business and Management Sciences, the conference will take place at CTF 2 within the university premises starting at 8:00 AM. The notice, dated April 13, 2026, emphasizes that attendance is not optional but a compulsory academic requirement.

The directive, signed by Associate Professor Ibrahim Mike Okumu, states that the conference is designed to engage students on critical global economic issues, particularly the structure and evolution of the global financial system and its implications for Africa’s growth and development.

“The issues to be examined are central to contemporary economic analysis and policy design,” the letter reads, underscoring the importance of the event in shaping students’ intellectual and analytical capabilities.

The Kampala Geopolitics Conference is organised under the auspices of the French Embassy in Uganda, in close partnership with Makerere University, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Alliance Française Kampala, and the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS).

University authorities have indicated that attendance will be formally recorded and will contribute to students’ academic engagement requirements. Participants are expected to arrive by 7:45 AM, actively engage in discussions, and remain for the full duration of the sessions.

Students unable to attend due to valid reasons have been instructed to seek prior written approval from the School, with late requests set to be disregarded.

The School of Economics noted that such engagements are part of deliberate efforts to expose students to high-level academic and policy discourse, preparing them for professional roles in economic planning and analysis.

The Kampala Geopolitics Conference is expected to bring together scholars and policy thinkers to discuss pressing global and regional economic dynamics.
