Lawmakers Seek Museveni Intervention Over Elwelu Arrest, Urge Dialogue
November 4, 2026
Members of the Teso Parliamentary Group have appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to intervene following the arrest of former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, calling for dialogue to address grievances and prevent tensions from escalating.
The legislators said dialogue remains the best way to resolve concerns surrounding the arrest and maintain peace in the Teso sub-region.
Their appeal comes amid growing concern among political and opinion leaders in Teso over security-related allegations against Elwelu.
The parliamentary group urged the President to help address the concerns through engagement with the relevant authorities, as calls for calm and a transparent inquiry continue.
Elwelu's arrest was announced by security spokesperson Col Chris Magezi, who said the former army officer was wanted over alleged subversive activities and plans to destabilise Teso.
Magezi also said security forces had recovered 15 guns, military fatigues and two pickup trucks allegedly in Elwelu's possession.
Authorities have said Elwelu will be charged and prosecuted in court. The allegations have not been independently verified.
