Three Uganda Prisons Service officers were injured after unknown assailants attempted to break into Kyegegwa Government Prison in western Uganda in the early hours of Friday, August 14, 2026.
The attackers also overpowered the officers deployed as night-shift sentries and made off with two firearms, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 1:00am, a statement issued by the Uganda Prisons Service said on Friday.
The injured officers have been identified as Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus, Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret and Warder Odongo Joshua. They were rushed to Kyegegwa General Hospital for medical treatment.
Uganda Prisons Service said no prisoner escaped during the attack.
“Unknown assailants attempted to break into Kyegegwa Government Prison and attacked three prison officers deployed for the night shift as sentries,” the statement said.
The two firearms lost during the incident were identified as a Uganda Prisons Service rifle and a Uganda Police firearm.
Following the attack, sister security agencies were immediately called in as investigations were launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the attempted break-in and identify those responsible.
The Prisons Service said efforts to apprehend the attackers and recover the stolen firearms are ongoing.
The Service has also appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects or recovery of the guns to report to the authorities.
